When your child decides to pursue a higher education it does not have to be at a university. There are so many options these days to choose from for furthering your education. Typically the more education you have the more choices that you will have in life. It is never too early to discuss college with your child but preparedness takes more than the last two years of high school.
Parents should start saving for college before elementary school. However, you start preparing academically in middle school. Even if a child has no definite path in mind there are key classes that should be taken in middle school so that college prep courses can be taken in high school. Advanced classes in math, science, reading and foreign languages should start in middle school. A broad academic background creates a strong collegial foundation. This is what most colleges want to see in a potential student.
A college will want to see grades for all years of high school. It is a major factor that is considered by an admissions board. So every year in high school it is important to maintain grade averages. Extracurricular activities are also very important. This shows that the student exhibits initiative and drive. These activities can either be a part of school or separate from school events and it does not matter if it is athletic or academic. Volunteering at organizations will also exhibit teamwork and caring toward others. If you hold a part time job, this will also look good to potential colleges because it demonstrates responsibility.
As you can see, the need to start early in preparing for college is great. Your high school days will be pretty busy for you and your child. Being prepared for anything will ultimately make the transition into college infinitely easier than if you wait until the last minute.
