Prepare Your Child For High School

A teenager that is entering high school can feel many emotions.  Excitement, anxiety, embarrassment and fear will alternate through your child’s mind before entering high school.  They are leaving an environment that has become familiar, a place where they know what to expect and where they belong.  Heading into high school the child essentially has to start over again in a new environment.  There are ways to help ease your child’s way into high school and help her to become adjusted more quickly to what will be a very exciting time in her life.

Go to the Orientation sessions that most high schools usually give.  Do not let your teenager talk you out of going to this important day out of embarrassment.  This is the day when you and your child will be able to observe the school and meet school staff.  This is the time when you can sit down with the Guidance Counselors and discuss what your plans are after high school.  This helps plan your high school years so that when it is time to apply for colleges your child will be well prepared.

It is probably a good idea to keep your stories from high school to yourself for now.  Be enthusiastic about their move to high school.  Encourage your child to talk about what they expect when she enters high school.  Try to soothe away any fears that she may be having about attending her new environment.  If you tell her horror stories from your high school days that may add more stress and anxiety to your child.

Take this opportunity to go over your expectations for social activities with your child.  Set curfews and adhere to them.  High school for teenagers is often a whirlwind of football games, parties and dances.  It is important that she understands what boundaries and rules you have regarding social activities beforehand.  Loosen the reigns some but do not let go altogether.
