Enough of us trying to tell you what kind of teaching methods work. If you haven’t learned from the past articles, then it is time that you stopped doing some of the things in the next paragraph. These teaching methods are proven to be ineffective and only end up causing more harm than advantage.
Giving pop quizzes is a favorite past time for a few teachers who have not prepared anything for the class on that day. There can be no worse evaluation tool other than pop quizzes which are taken by teachers with bad teaching skills. Pop unannounced quizzes cause unwanted anxiety in students. The technique to keep the students on their toes back fires and leads to the students losing the importance of studying. If you take these tests for grades, then you are further increasing the damage. The next biggest technique of teaching that does not work is to punish students for not completing their homework. Homework in no way helps in improvement of the students performance. Teachers need to reduce the amount of assignments and give more challenging things to do at home instead of class work. This is a common practice in movies where as soon as the bell rings, students run out of class rooms which the teacher is still teaching. This is a failure upon the part of the teacher who fails miserably in controlling the children. If you let students develop this habit, you will only make them wish for the bell to wing from the beginning of the class. Don’t just look at the scampering students as a bystander. You need to use the final moments as valuable teaching time. Never take any insult personally. This is harder said than done, but you really need to keep emotions out of the class room when you begin teaching.
